Supreme Judicial Council Approves New Code of Conduct Reforms for Judges

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) of Pakistan has approved significant amendments to the Code of Conduct for judges of the superior judiciary, introducing updated rules regarding public participation, ethical responsibilities, and reporting of external influence.

Under the revised code, judges of the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) may attend political or diplomatic events only after receiving prior approval from their respective Chief Justices.

Strengthening Judicial Integrity

The new reforms focus on improving judicial independence, transparency, accountability, and institutional trust. Judges are now required to promptly report any attempt to influence their judicial duties, with defined procedures and timelines for authorities to review and address such matters.

Why It Matters

  • Strengthens ethical standards within the judiciary
  • Promotes greater transparency and accountability
  • Protects judges from improper influence
  • Improves coordination among judicial institutions
  • Enhances public confidence in the rule of law

The amendments represent an effort to modernize judicial governance while ensuring that members of the superior judiciary maintain independence and uphold the highest professional standards.
